The nurse is asking closed-ended questions, she is not making eye contact with the patient, and she is standing at least 8 feet from the patient. What type of communication is this? How effective is the communication? 2. A nurse is interviewing a female client who has recently immigrated to the United States. The nurse makes frequent eye contact, leans forward in her seat, and asks direct personal questions. The client seems uncomfortable, gives one-word, noncommittal answers, and even seems shocked at certain questions. What should the nurse do in this situation? 3. Standing far away and asking questions is considered to be verbal communication. This type of communication only has so much effectives and it leans more towards the low side of the scale. Asking close ended questions provides limited information compared to open ended questions. Being well aware that the patient has AIDS, standing far away while avoid eye contact would be considered disrespectful. This patient needs to be treated and spoken to like any other patient in the facility. A distance of more than 12 feet is considered a public zone of space. The nurse might communicate more effectively if her distance were 1 to 4 feet from the patient.
